IT 017
IT 017 [Treaty 5] was signed on May 22, 1798. British military forces needed a military and naval post on Lake Huron to secure the defence of Upper Canada. The Penetanguishene Treaty, a manuscript original, is unique in that William Claus, Superintendent of Indian Affairs, purchased from the "Chippeway tribe" [sic] all the land, water, islands and land under water at Penetanguishene harbour. IT 018 is a map of the surrender.
