Early settlers in Edmonton

1886, by Joseph Tyrrell

Like other field scientists with the Geological Survey of Canada, Tyrrell saw the value of photography as a means of recording the people and places he encountered during his travels. A camera was as vital to his field kit as a rifle, canoe, notebook, or specimen bag. In 1886, he recorded this early view of homesteaders in the Edmonton area.
