Established in 1873, the North West Mounted Police (NWMP) was the predecessor to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). Fearing that the United States was planning to annex Canadian Arctic territories, the NWMP established detachments in the Far North. The first post was built in 1903 at Fullerton, north of Chesterfield Inlet (Igluligaarjuk) on the Hudson Bay coast. The photographs taken at Fullerton depict various aspects of Inuit life in the early 20th century.
