IT 296

IT 296 [Treaty 157A] is a manuscript original of western Treaty 6 signed at Fort Carlton on August 23 and 28, 1876, and at Fort Pitt on September 9, 1876 by Alexander Morris, lieutenant-governor of the Northwest Territories, and representatives of the "Plain and Wood Cree." Treaty 6 covers the central portions of modern Alberta and Saskatchewan. It is unique because it contains a "medicine chest" provision, and another provision for food in the event of "pestilence and famine." Related Treaty 6 adhesions, IT 297-305, IT 328, IT 494 and IT 501, were signed in the years from 1877 to 1956.
