IT 255/256

IT 255/256 [Treaty 124] is a manuscript original of western Treaty 1 signed at Lower Fort Garry (Stone Fort) on August 3, 1871. The first western-numbered treaty was negotiated with the "Chippewa and Swampy Cree Tribes of Indians" by Indian Commissioner Wemyss Simpson and the lieutenant-governor of Manitoba and the Northwest Territories, Adams G. Archibald. This was the first treaty to contain a provision for education. IT 256 contains "outside promises" recorded at the time of treaty signing and incorporated into Treaty 1 a few years later.
