Roche Percée, Canadian
Illustrated News
1874, by Henri Julien
While resting on the banks of the Souris River, near
Roche Percée, Julien completed this sketch of
the North-West Mounted Police camp. With only a third
of their expedition behind them, Commissioner George
A. French was so worried for the safety of the column
that he divided it into two parts, sending Inspector
Jarvis and the weakest horses along a more northerly
route to Fort Edmonton. This alternative route followed
the old Métis trails and had a better supply
of grass and water.
